Thanks Don.  Would love to see some other students of Noel besides the two of us post some vocational exercises here also!  Just because Noel doesn't visit here anymore, doesn't mean we need to stop the exercises...right, Dean, Tim, Barbara, Kathy, etc.?!

 ;)

Attached is the chart...Ascendant is 22 Virgo 13.  Midheaven is 20 Gemini 32.

And instead of trying to guess the vocation--something that Noel has repeatedly urged us NOT to do--I will just mention one seemingly strong vocational need, which is, the need for creative self-expression, or creativity.

This is suggested by the Sun in Leo being the final dispositor, and in very close contact with the MC.  It also contacts the ruler of the 5th, and the ruler of the 5th is in the 5th and it too contacts the MC.  There are also two quintiles, and Neptune is salient by being peregrine.  And I find it interesting that the evolutionary North Node is also in the 5th, which seems to provide further confluence...

And since Neptune rules the 7th, this vocational need for creative self-expression also suggests a vocational need for public projection.

So creative self-expression given public projection seems to be suggested here...

Other suggested vocational needs?!

Now I'll venture off to my word processor and develop a wrap-up that integrates an interesting back story with the MHEP.  Then I'll post it Monday or Tuesday.

The subject of this vocational exercise is my cousin Gerry.  All through childhood, Gerry was obsessed with the notion of growing up to be a doctor.  He actually made his own toy doctor’s kits, even painting “G. Murphy, MD” on the little suitcase he used as his play doctor’s bag.

Gerry graduated from high school in 1952, roughly 2 years after the U.S. became involved in the Korean War.  That fall, he moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to attend Marquette University, most likely majoring in pre-med.  Gerry was drafted and dropped out of Marquette, intending to re-enroll after his hitch was complete.  While in the service, Gerry had to make a parachute jump.  The jump did not go well.  Gerry landed poorly on his dominant right hand and mangled his index finger.  So although Gerry didn’t die in that parachute jump, his dreams of becoming a surgeon did.

Gerry was wiped out, at loose ends and feeling totally lost.  He seemed to be in free-fall, pun not intended.  James Williams’ drill down from the Gemini midheaven to the final dispositor Sun seemed to fit relatively well as he tried a number of lightweight jobs, such as a “male housemother” at a frat at the University of Virginia, teaching at a radio announcer’s school in New York City, summer stock acting in Shreveport, Louisiana, broadcast journalism in Benton Harbor, Michigan  and a television newscaster in Rock Island, Illinois and, among other things, more radio announcing in Tampa, Florida.  Meanwhile Gerry had cosmetic surgery to remove his mangled finger.  I should reiterate now about how double-bodied signs on the MC suggest multiple careers, either consecutively or concurrently.  While in Tampa, Gerry heard a commercial on his own station for a local community college offering a program to become a physician’s assistant.  When Gerry checked with the college to confirm that his missing finger would not interfere with taking vital signs or prescribing medicine, he enrolled as fast as he could.

Don,

Sorry I missed this... thanks for posting.

James' I actually like your "process" almost more than how GM's life played out. Nice work.

It kind of got me thinking about 'differences' as determinants in destiny. Clinical psychologist have done the research and intellect, heritable factors, environment, and temperament (essentially the lottery of the womb) account for 30%-40% of the likelihood of achieving success in a field or attaining accomplishments in life. That leaves anywhere from 60%-70% to be accounted for by randomness.

Depending on how you look at it that either takes the pressure off the individual as in "eh, what the heck. It's not up to me," OR "Dang nabbit I better get a move on 'cuz I need to make every minute count."

GM's Jupiter-Saturn show a certain potential and determination in the face of the odds, both being in contact with the MC. Saturn is also Quindecile both the ruler of the MC, Mercury, and Neptune. Again, potential for overcompensating BUT also for "disrupting" the process James described so brilliantly. Saturn is also inconjunct Pluto, and in June of '53 transiting Pluto was conjunct the Sun. That fits transit fits with an identity transformation that suggests some sort of disruption in plans. Even in the best of extension processes disruption is more likely than not if the psychological literature is correct (not claiming it is) but perhaps when we see such difficult aspects we are advised to be circumspect. In fact Noel often worked up the MHEP and carefully noted his analysis but seemed to use the vocational direction to affirm the chart and the client's chosen direction, while in some cases with high conviction he might suggest a 'new' direction. But he would keep the cards close to his chest and routinely evaluate the matter as part of the overall consultation.

If the MHEP works "most of the time" and we can get a match for the individual's vocation as often as the individual matches their chosen direction with their chart's potential, then a 30%-40% hit rate would be an incredible success. In other words, we might begin a consultation with the notion that most people (60%-70%) are not "on-track."

Thanks for filling in the back story on that vocational exercise Don.

To be honest, I just cannot see doctor or medical professional in that chart.

Broadcasting, radio or communicating for entertainment, yes, but not a doctor.

Do enjoy the exercises though, definitely keep the mental faculties sharper.

I confess that I really couldn't really see the inclination to medicine at the outset, either.  Although it's not part of the MHEP, my own orientation as a wild-eyed "ascendant freak"  took over here. After all, the ascendant is a major part of one's identity.  Gerry's Virgo ascendant spelled out much to me.  The fact that the MHEP drilled down to that Leo Sun* opposition Saturn suggests to me that perhaps he was drawn to the power and authority that doctors exude.

Taking a closer look at the Sun opposition Saturn Rx in Gerry's chart and how close it is to the 6th-12th cuspal axis, I wouldn't be surprised if those planets were deemed to be rushing into those houses.  As Gerry's TOB was given on the hour, a good rectification just might move those planets the necessary distance.  The tenancy of either end of that axis could also suggest an inclination to medicine.

Before I forget, I think it's amazing how a single finger could impact a man's career that much.  Remember that Gemini rules the hands and fingers.

Interesting example, Don & All.

A few ideas...

Looks to me like his 10th House natal Mars-Pluto-Venus (11th), a powerhouse in healing, nurturing, caring Cancer, could reflect an instinctual draw to and personal identification with the field of medicine/health/healing - where his Gemini MC knowledge would be physically needed and critically appreciated by others.

Along with his Virgo MC, his Sun ruling his 12th House could add more individual emphasis on service and a helping/healing relationship with others (N Neptune, ruling his Pisces 7th, is in his 12th House).

Hear what you are saying there Don, about maybe your cousin's motivation was the Sun-Saturn opposition and a position of assumed authority, both planets are strong by sign although Saturn is rx and both weak by house placement.

Believe there is a definite advantage to looking at older persons charts and then relaying their work history, as it loans a bit of hindsight, whereas the younger kids usually don't have a clue as to what they really want to do, setting out, and then are at risk of settling for a vocation that their parents chose instead.

Am still toying with the idea that major accidents, illnesses or upheavels in life, are possibly sometimes opportunities to change paths, even though it might feel like events are forced on us. Maybe even they are written into the chart, but the fate-free will discussion is beyond the boundaries of this thread topic.

I believe I've spotted another contributory factor in Gerry's inclination toward medicine.  How about UR = SU/MO, where Uranus rules his 6th house whilst tenanted in the 8th of alternative healing?

It's also helpful to remember that the 11th is the 6th from the 6th (medicine), and it contains Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Pluto (via its conjunction with Venus).

Tim's catch of Saturn quindecile Mercury (hands), with Mercury ruling the MC, and located in the 6th from the 6th, perhaps provides the strongest clue to his lifelong "obsession" or strong interest with medicine...

An interesting vocational "destiny" indeed...

For the record, Gerry passed away March 14, 2007.

I must agree, Gerry's MHEP clearly does suggest broadcasting, but I have no idea if Gerry had any formal training during those years when he was at loose ends.

Don B.

In looking at his Jyotisha natal chart, it's easier to see his obsession with medicine.  The 6th House rules becoming a doctor in one's Jyotisha chart...his 6th House ruler is in the 7th, thus aspecting his 1st House of self.  And his 6th House contains Rahu, and it is aspected by six planets!

I know I am chiming in a bit late but I have continually seen the Scorpio-Dr association (Pluto) for many, many years.  Mercury being the ruler of the MC is of course conjunct Pluto in the 11th with Pluto ruling the 3rd (communications).  Gerry was very much involved with "communications" and his 11th house rules "one's wishes," and he wished to be a physician, however the Sun Saturn combination made his dreams (Neptune 12th conjunct Asc.) dissolve away and slip out of reach as Saturn often does
.  Scorpio and healing go hand in hand and it is obvious that Gerry made an attempt at both careers (Gemini MC).  Neptune in the 12th conjunct the Asc.often is seen in the charts of Drs.  Mercury, the 3rd house and its ruler Pluto all put in their appearances for Gerry's ventures into radio and Saturns condition suggests to major difficulties regarding Pluto and Mercury rulerships.
