Title: Total Solar Eclipse and Odysseus' Return
Post by: Pamela Young on February 14, 2018, 07:32:24 AM
I've been reading Emily Wilson's great new translation of The Odyssey by Homer, and it got me to thinking about the astrological phenomena that correlated with Odysseus' return home, after the fall of Troy.  I had read a while back that this event correlated with a total solar eclipse that happened at noon on April 16, 1178 BCE (Julian date), and that it would have been visible right over Ithaca, which was Odysseus' home.  I had a look at the chart; couldn't find a location for Troy, so I used the modern Greek city of Patra, which looks to be pretty close to the island of Ithaca.  The Moon was the chart ruler, and conjoined the Sun and MC at 14 Aries.  Algol was also there!  Really stunning, for someone going home after the end of a ten year war.  Astrology never fails to blow me away.

Here is a link to the original article I read:  http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25337041/

Here’s the beginning of this new translation; I love the clear, modern English:

Tell me about a complicated man.
Muse, tell me how he wandered and was lost
when he had wrecked the holy town of Troy,
and where he went, and who he met, the pain
he suffered in the storms at sea, and how
he worked to save his life and bring his men
back home.  He failed to keep them safe; poor fools,
they ate the Sun God's cattle, and the god
kept them from home.  Now goddess, child of Zeus,
tell the old story for our modern times.
Find the beginning.

Thank you, Pamela, for indexing the article.  That is pretty cool that if someone took an interest, the astrology could be laid out for the whole odysssey.  It is such a dramatic epic of love and war, and delay and trickery.  I read the Oddessey in Latin class during my sophomore and junior year of high school, in Latin.  What stuck in my head so heavily, besides the hero Hector, whom I named one son after, was how Penelope would weave during the day for those ten years, and then tear out her work at night, saying that when she was done with her project she would choose a suitor.  And they waited, those stupid bastards, only to get slaughtered in the end.  Talk about Jesus overthrowing the vendor tables in the temple.

Now I may need to look at that chart, and check out the Mercury retrograde, etc.

😄

Thanks,  Barbara.  I was just amazed that the Odyssey was apparently based at least partly on real events; I had always assumed it was total fiction.  Just astounding.

I hope the link to the article that I put in my first post is still working for anyone who tries it.  I've noticed that it doesn't always work; sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.  Yet it always works perfectly fine when I click on the exact same link over on the Astrodienst site.  It seems it is only on this site that there is a problem.  I have to say, it appears I have an astrological cyber-stalker on this site, and I'm getting really fed up with it.  Get a life.

And just look at that!

Sun (Odysseus), Neptune (Poseidon), Mercury (Hermes) and Venus (Athena) all in Pisces.

Hi Rob,

Thank you very much for your interest, and for the youtube video; I look forward to watching it.  I'm a little confused by your comment  quoted above, because the chart I attached shows only Venus, Mars and Uranus in Pisces; are you using a Gregorian chart?  Anyway, it's still amazing; any way you slice it there's a lot of Pisces, and that sure does correlate with long distance travel on 'the wine-dark sea.'

Best regards,
Pam

Oops!  Sorry, Rob, I guess you were referring to today's planetary positions!  Duh.

"couldn't find a location for Troy, so I used the modern Greek city of Patra, which looks to be pretty close to the island of Ithaca." Pamela Young

Very interesting subject, Pamela. Coincidentally, I saw a show recently on a television channel about the archaeological excavations that led to the factual discovery of what was thought to be a tale. Some information on the subject:

Hisarlik (Turkey) - Scientific Excavations at Ancient Troy

"Hisarlik (occasionally spelled Hissarlik and also known as Ilion, Troy or Ilium Novum) is the modern name for a tell located near the modern city of Tevfikiye in the Dardanelles of northwest Turkey. [...]  The mess known as Hisarlik is widely believed by scholars to be the ancient site of Troy, which inspired the marvelous poetry of the Greek poet Homer's masterpiece, The Iliad."

p.s .: Regarding a possible "astrological cyber-stalker on this site", I do not believe someone on this site / forum (beside the admin) can change or play with your links. It worked perfectly for me, but I always use a add- blocker and the page that you posted contains some pop-ups. Since the subject is about "Trojan Wars", maybe it attracts Trojan Horses!  :D (In computing, a Trojan horse is a program that appears harmless, but is, in fact, malicious.)

Nice Work Pamela, I looove mythology, cut my milk teeth on Aesops Fables.

Rob, just a minor error re: current influences, you left out Chiron. Who else is going to provide the civilising influence for all those unruly mobster type centaurs.  ;)

Hi Robynne,

No, I didn’t miss Chiron. I just thought it best not to mention him.  ;)

Hi Antonio,

Thanks very much for the links to info about Hisarlik; that's great.  As far as the location for the eclipse, it is said to have been directly over the island of Ithaca, Odysseus' home, so I guess it's okay to use Patra as I did; going by a map, it seemed to be the nearest modern large town to Ithaca.

As for my possibly having a cyber stalker - there's no question about that, I'm afraid.  There have been way too many incidences over some years leading me to this conclusion; this business of the disappearing link is only the most recent.  I'm continually unable to post charts for no apparent reason, and frequently when I'm trying to write a comment I can't finish it because the cursor goes totally haywire; if I do manage to finish it, then it won't post - simply will not post, no matter how many times I click on 'Post.'  I'm not saying it's necessarily a user of this site who is responsible; in fact, I suspect I know who it is, but as I have absolutely no evidence that would stand up in court, I can't say who.  Anyway, I hesitated to mention it at all as I know it tends to make me look paranoid, but I got so fed up when that link stopped working that I just had to say something.  It's time the responsible person knows I've had it.

Thanks, Robynne.  I looove it, too!  I just can't get over it that myths that were thought for so long to be total fiction are turning out to have a basis in fact, sometimes a strong basis.  I love it!

Pamela, you're a scrupulous - meticulous - fastidious - and punctilious researcher! I imagine your cyber stalker must be someone who hates these qualities. Closer than Patra, would've make Penelope very jealous! ;D Patra = 21E44 38N15 / Ithaca = 20E43 38N22

Antonio, you have me blushing!  Thanks!!  And thank you also for the tips re ditching my cyber stalker; I changed my password, but unfortunately the Hitman link wouldn't work for me because my laptop is a Mac.  Sure wish I could find some anti-malware that would work on this machine; the Apple support people keep using Malwarebytes and telling me that everything is fine, my machine is clean, which it clearly is not.  Once I was even told by a support person that, yes, it does look like my machine is hacked, but there's nothing they can (will) do about it, because that's not their purview, i.e., the machine itself is working fine, there's nothing wrong with it or with any of its software; it's not their fault if someone has hacked me.  Sigh.  I've been battling this for years; I don't know what to do.  Anyway, thanks very much for trying to help; I really appreciate it.
