Are all horary charts readable ?

An essay by R.J. Smith

Some very well known horary astrologers (like John Frawley and Radu, the former owner of Astrology Weekly dot com) are advocating or claiming that EVERY horary chart..is a readable chart....

I strongly disagree... Not ALL horary charts are readable...

They claim that horary charts are also 'event' charts, so why not interpret the event, as well as the question...

So...according to Mr. Frawley's reasoning...? If you can't enter the house from the front door, simply go to the back door or to another room and break into the house...like a burglar...? LOL

Break and enter, at your will ? And, as long as you get your way..."all is good" according to Mr. Frawley...

This is just incredibly misguided and WRONG advice...How about... if the front door (of a house?) cannot be opened, for some reason, then maybe it's because you were NEVER meant to live in that house....or you are not the rightful owner or resident of that house...

Fate versus free-will, perhaps ?

So, maybe you, the beginner, have been sucked in... to believe Frawley, as well ?

Horary astrology is actually the highest, purest form of astrology that there is... The honest answer that you often get from a horary chart must supercede all other answers and auguries...

This is why the Lilly's and Bonano's of yesteryear have taught us that you only have ONE chance to ask the question...You cannot repeatedly ask the question in horary astrology...

Therefore, if you consult a horary chart, then later go to see a tarot card reader and psychic to ask the very same question, you are essentially telling the universe.... that you do not really trust or have faith in the horary chart process...

It's that very notion of 'non-confidence' in the astrologer, that is the key issue, here...

Unfortunately. many newcomers to horary try to get sneaky by re-asking the question until they (finally) hear what they want to hear ?

Consulting a horary astrologer is much like getting a verdict from the Supreme Court...

If you do not 'like' the verdict given by the Supreme Court judge, you'll have to live with it...in other words, 'tough titties' for you, the querent !

You cannot appeal or re-ask the question, over and over, as Frawley or Radu suggest...That would make a complete mockery of the strictures against judgement...

In real life, you cannot sleep or reside at the local court house or judge's chambers in your community. A courthouse is a place of judgement and court business, BUT, it is NOT meant to be a dwelling place....

How ironic, then, that some people come to horary bulletin boards around the world, asking repeated questions about their personal lives on an almost daily basis...

Should the horary section be like a hotel for tourists, or should it be a place for only the most critical of judgements (like a court house ?)

We must remember that consulting a horary chart is never your personal ' right,' nor is it a game or toy ? it's a priviledge..

In Lee Lehman's book, The Martial Art of Horary Astrology, she claims that horary astrologers and their querents must seize the moment, (like martial artists?) by somehow concentrating or focusing on the question asked...

I honestly think that Lee Lehman wants to propogate her martial arts phiiosophy onto astrologers...

That's quite unfair of her...People come to astrology not always in good mental shape...Some who are in the midst of personal crisis are mentally and emotionally trashed and are not always mentally well... So, according to Lee Lehman, only those who are  'pychologically well' and able to focus can qualify for a horary reading...

That's being unrealistic....Horary astrology, in my view, should always be made available to the widest possible audience, including the very poor, the unemployed, the disabled, those on fixed incomes, etc.

As a long-time horary specialist myself, I personally do not force such "pre-qualifications" or demands onto my own clients...

I also do not feel that its necessary that horary astrology should be turned into a 'martial art,' nor should horary practicioners practice martial arts...(and I'm a long time martial artist with over 30 years experience !)

What should we expect, then, of the horary querent ?

In my view, the only expectation that we should have (of the querent) is that the querent have a sense of honesty, open-mindedness, and/or humility and that they will accept the higher wisdom of the (horary) astrologer interpreting the chart...

The reason? If you, the querent of horary astrology, cannot defer to the wisdom of a higher authority, then why bother asking the question in the first place ?

have a blessed day,

Void-Of-Course Moon

Hi RJ  For charts that can't be read, does this also apply to a chart that has a void-of-course Moon at the time the questions is asked.
Or should I wait until the void-of-course Moon passes and then ask my question.
Also if I am doing an event chart for a sporting contest which starts with a void-of-course Moon, am I unable to get an answer of the winner from that chart?   Have a blessed day, Halina

thank you for this post rj, i agree with you completely. i have been a reader for most of my life. so was my mom and her mother. we use cards, dreams and now i use astrology. when we use a divination technique to get an answer to a question, we need to submit to a higher power, and i agree, we only need to do it once. unfortunately,... most people don't like that. if they don't hear what they want to hear,... they ask again and again, till they are satisfied with the result.  it leads me to the all time philosophical question,... "do we have free will?" or is it an illusion? (maybe this question can be submitted to horary).

i am not sure why people even consult a reader if they are hell bent on getting the answer they want.consulting an oracle can be very frightening,.. it asks a person to relinquish control... it is unfortunate that readers are a dime a dozen these days, telling
people what they may or may not want to hear is a big responsibility, it can have a major psychological impact.

ps.. when a planet is retrograde... like mercury.. how does it affect a horary chart?

thank you

Hey Micheala..

Thanks, kindly, for your imput...

Well said ! And I am, also, a longtime proponent of the tarot...I have owned two tarot decks in the past..the Waite Rider edition and also, the Robin Wood version...  I have become very skillful in reading the tarot, actually...

I also find shuffling tarot cards to be rather practical and therapeutic, actually, as I have permanent arthritis in my hands (due to a horrible car accident, we won't get into that !) I also have natal Mercury, in close opposition to natal Saturn, and conjunct the natal vertex and anti-vertex axis... (Mercury also rules the hands).

To answer your question,  "do we have free will or is it an illusion..."

In my mind, all free-will... stems from a man or woman's dreams...Therefore, dreams are a type of  'illusion,' are they not ?

The illusion then manifests itself into reality... through free-will... Anyhow, that is how I see it...

" How does Mercury retrograde affect the horary chart ?"

If the 1st house (ruling the querent?) or the significator or "ruler" of the question asked about... is disposed of by Mercury retrograde (in other words, Gemini or Virgo is on the house cusp?) then that CHANGES the whole ball game...

Retrograde planets signify that the querent (or natter asked about?) is on shaky ground and that the question asked will be altered and/or revised in some way...down the road, usually when Mercury turns direct in motion...

Meanwhile, retrogradation, IF in positive aspect to other planets, often means that NEW PEOPLE and situations will enter the picture,  mitigating the blow somewhat, but the  'change of mind...' is still immiment...

best regards,

R.J.

Halina:

These are good questions...

As you know, the rules of sports horary astrology are quite different than for a regular horary question chart.

Therefore, the  "void of course Moon" in a sports contest has a much different application...

From what I have learned from doing sports charts, over the years, the void of course Moon means that the favorite will usually win the match, since there is nothing getting in the way of the favorite.. and from winning..

Regarding your second question,  I'm not sure what you meant by it ?

Do you mean whether a void of course Moon is a stricture against judgement  !  If that was your question, then yes, that is a traditional stricture...

If you knowingly know that the Moon is void of course and you sit on the question (until later?) that means that are are trying to will the question to your advantage...

The problem with that, is once the question is formulated and becomes clear in your own mind, that is the point of no return and therefore, the question is BORN, whether you deny it or not...

Therefore, a horary question cannot be  'picked and groomed,' like a woman giving birth by c-section... LOL

The rules are clear that, once you mentally understand the question, that is the MOMENT OF TRUTH !

HOWEVER, there are exceptions to this rule when a professional astrologer must make a judgement call to refuse services, even if money or income is at stake...

I once met a couple at a local bar and they knew that I did horary astrology charts... They had a question for me about their relationship, but here is the problem:  they were p*ssed drunk... and had been drinking (and fighting?) all night...Like many young Canadian couples tend to do ? LOL

Alcohol is actually a depressant and tends to make people sometimes very negative in their thoughts...

I politely told the couple that if they were still serious about the question asked, to phone me in the morning or the next day...

The reason we do that..is because, we professional astrologers charge a fee for our services and therefore, we are NOT a public charity...

Therefore, if you are so serious about a horary chart,  then, show me the money, honey... !

If people are drunk or stoned, they could turn around and say, I never authorized you to do an astrology chart... I was DRUNK...(or stoned?) !

Therefore...please give me a refund...?

Consumer law says that if a person is drunk, they may not fully understand their contractual obligations, as consumers and therefore, they might be entitled to a refund...in a court of law...as long as they ask for the refund within seven days of the purchase...

Meanwhile, NO refunds from me !  Once you ask for my services and I perform the service, there are no refunds...That is my long standing policy...

best regards,

R.J.
