I think there's been some miscommunication here.  Sorry if it was me who caused the problem; if so, it was entirely unintentional.  By the way, I for one STILL can only see my own profile.  When I hover the mouse over anyone else's name it says: 'View so-and-so's profile', but when I click on those words I then get the message again, 'Sorry but you can't see just anyone's profile.'  It does seem like something kind of strange is going on here - just for the record.

Oops - I do now see the email address when I hover the mouse over the envelope icon, as Don said.  Got it!  Thanks, Don, and Admin for your patience.  I'm just not a techie, what can I say.

If it's possible to remove that envelope icon, then that would mean that people can't email other people but only send private messages through the speech bubble...

So were you to remove that envelope icon, then the logical result is that you won't get emails from anyone (and probably not send them either) but as it's not practical at the moment to remove that icon, the easiest thing to do is to remove your email from your profile or to put a dummy email address instead.

I can't remember if it's necessary to have your email when you register but if it is, once you register, you can easily remove/change it after. Admin have rightly mentioned that if you're not a member, none of this information is shown - i.e. you don't get the envelope icon showing up. Once you're signed in, your contact email, your website if you have registered the details etc. all display as icons...

And as far as I remember, this function has always been there.

My own concern, when I originally asked the question, was that I wanted to reach another forum member and wasn't sure when he'd see a private message, as I didn't know how often he came to the forum, so I thought I'd send him an email as well.  When I received a message saying I couldn't see just anyone's profile I wondered, what is the point of having the profiles, then?  I didn't realize at the time that I could have seen his email address by hovering the mouse over the envelope icon; I hadn't noticed that.
