Current Forum Time
« on: April 30, 2018, 01:51:26 AM »
Forum members,

What time do you get when you post a new message? Also, if you login into your account and check the "Look and Layout Preferences", what time is shown for "Current forum time"*?

In my case, i notice that the displayed time corresponds to the time zone AKDT - Anchorage, Alaska, United States!  ???

* Assuming that the "Time Offset" is set to 0 (auto detect)

I know how to change the "Time Offset" to show my time zone, but i was puzzled regarding the default time.
The reason is that the SMF forum gets its time from the server.

"If the server's time is wrong, then SMF's time will be wrong.  SMF cannot access these functions of the server, so it cannot 'correct' the time.  SMF itself doesn't use anything EXCEPT the time from the server."

No problema... now i know why.

But my desktop computer says:

5:36 AM

1/05/2018

NZ time

Am quite used to dealing with dual time zones myself though, the dilemma arises when you all realise that I am posting from the future. Never mind, if there are any bad mistakes, will correct them before you even have to be bothered about them.  :)

Thank you, Robynne. This confirms that you are 20 hours ahead of the Forum default time. This is really a very hot forum ... hence the need to have it relocated from Arizona California to Alaska!

More seriously, if i want to erect a chart for the exact time that i - or someone else - has posted a message here, i usually assume the time presented in the forum as the same as the server time for noeltyl.com site. Now, i realize that the server time zone is not correct... and currently is -8h (AKDT) than UTC.. instead of -7h (MST) (PDT) from UTC.

The location and time zone was corrected, since this forum or the Tyl site does not exist at his home/place or some one else's place, but at the server location at Anaheim, CA (as i've been using frequently to erect forum charts).

Actually, this incarnation of the Forum was 'born" in San Jose, California because that's where its developers lived (!)

Yes, Don, i understand... but this topic is not about the birth of the new forum.

The forum page shows that you posted your message: Today at 12:27:17 PM. Now, imagine that some time in the future you don't remeber the day or at what time you posted it, at your location. The day/date should be easy, but how do you find out at what time, if you don't know what time zone is being displayed in this forum?

Is it San Jose, CA (PDT)? Nope. Is it Fountain Hills or Phoenix, AZ (MST)? That would be great, since it is MST all year long (no DST)... but nope.  Is it Anaheim, CA (host web server location)? Nope. In fact the default time displayed in this forum is AKDT (Alaska Daylight Time*)!!!

The problem is not in the forum settings, but in the host/web server. I would like to be corrected if i'm wrong. Thanks in advance.

* My guess is that the site server at Anaheim, CA did not updated automatically from PST (-8h) to PDT (-7h) on Mar 11, 2018.
